Public Service at Christ Church
Christ Church’s mission includes many calls for us to welcome, engage, and share with the community.
- Invite our neighbors to participate in ongoing programs and co-create new ones.
Christ Church partnered with Better Housing Policies, a local Chinese-American advocacy group, to design and launch our Saturday Fun & Games Activities program for Children. We have had over 70 children and their parents attend out program, and the program is staffed by volunteers in their teens to their seventies from the neighborhood and the church.
- Work with local leaders and organizations to address social justice and environmental issues
Christ Church Lutheran and/or its pastor has ongoing connections to San Francisco Interfaith Council, Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity, Faith in Action San Francisco, and the Lutheran Office of Public Policy. Through these connections, we advocate in the hopes that all of God’s people can thrive, especially those who are pushed to the outside in our neighborhoods and communities.

- Open our building to the community for a variety of uses, including music, neighborhood groups, and special events

In a typical week, Christ Church hosts 100 individuals in 12-step groups, 25 members of neighborhood groups, and 30 musicians for rehearsals or music lessons.
We also regularly host recitals, concerts, private events, and community public gatherings with 50-200 attendees.
- Partner with groups that share our mission
- Share our time, talents, and resources with the neighborhood and the world

Christ Church works with the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. We hosted the Sunrise Food Pantry for many years, receiving a commendation from the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank for being a member of the Million Pounds Club. Although our pantry was shut down during the pandemic, we are working with the Food Bank to restart our pantry. We continue to volunteer as individuals and as a group for the Food Bank.
Christ Church works with San Francisco Night Ministry. We gather to make a meal for the Mission Open Cathedral on every fifth Thursday and serve at the worship service. Our pastor has served as a Night Minister.
Our congregation also does ongoing work with Days for Girls and service and volunteer projects with community grants from Thrivent.
In addition to service, Christ Church sets aside a part of its donations each year to Lutheran Social Services of Northern California, Reconciling in Christ (support for LGBTQ+ Lutheran leaders), San Francisco Interfaith Council, San Francisco Night Ministry, the Center for Climate Change, and the San Francisco – Marin Food Bank.
